Frequently asked questions

Will our wedding be legally recognized in the Ireland?

Yes, weddings in Cyprus are completely legal and recognized internationally, the only exception is the Catholic wedding service which must be preceded by a civil wedding.

My fiancé is not a Irish citizen, will this be a problem?

Not at all, but bear in mind that the legal requirements and documentation varies for each nationality, please make sure that you inform us well in advance so that we can advise you accordingly. We would also strongly recommend that you contact the Cyprus Embassy in Ireland before you travel.

Where and when can I get married?

By Cyprus law your marriage must take place in the same resort as your hotel and both bride and groom must be resident on the island for at least 2 - 3 working days before the ceremony can take place. Civil weddings take place in the town hall between 10:00 am and 2:00pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays). Civil weddings can also be held in certain hotels in some resorts; these usually take place after 2:00pm and are subject to an extra charge.

How long will the wedding ceremony take?

This will depend on the type of ceremony you have, a church wedding will last 20 - 40 minutes and you can discuss the order of service, hymns and wedding music with the priest at the pre-wedding meeting. Civil ceremonies are conducted by the local mayor or marriage officer and are shorter, lasting around 10 minutes. All ceremonies are conducted in English.

Which name should the bride travel under?

It is best if the bride travels under her maiden name for the whole holiday as the name on her flight ticket has to match the name on her passport.

My fiancée would love a church wedding but I have not been baptized, can we still get married in the church?

At least one of you must be baptised for either an Anglican or Catholic church ceremony and you will be required to attend an interview with the priest prior to the wedding. The church reserves the right to decline to conduct a ceremony in which case a civil ceremony would be arranged instead.

How should I transport my wedding dress?

You should pack your wedding dress securely in a suitcase or dress bag, this will be transported in the luggage hold due to space restrictions in the cabin. Don't worry about a few creases, due to the humidity these will usually drop out once the dress has been hung up for a couple of days. If not, don't panic, most hotels offer a dry cleaning and ironing service-your wedding coordinator will be able to advise you.

Helpful hints to get the most out of your big day

What to wear
Of course you want to look your best and perhaps the most important thing when selecting your wedding dress is to choose a style that suits you and makes you feel fantastic, but you also want to be comfortable and choosing the right fabric and style is crucial.
Cyprus in the summer can get very hot so lightweight fabrics in summer styles are perfect as they will keep you cool and show off your tan, you can then add a traditional veil or for a fresh look, hair swept elegantly up and dressed with a stylish tiara or romantic flowers. It is also a good idea to think about how you are going to celebrate after the wedding, if you are opting for a formal dinner in a hotel or restaurant, a traditional dress with a train will make a statement. But if you are going to dance the night away in a taverna or on a catamaran, a more simple contemporary style will be more practical.
If you are wearing a light coloured dress, underwear in a skin tone is a must, the light is very strong in Cyprus and white or coloured underwear will definitely show through.
If you are having a church wedding you will be expected to dress appropriately with no beach wear or very revealing dresses.
For the groom and male guests, lightweight fabrics such as linen are perfect, waistcoats are also a good alternative if you prefer not to wear a jacket.
Don't forget that everyone is going to want to admire the ring so your hands need to be in tip top shape, why not treat yourself to a manicure to ensure that you have flawless skin and perfect nails?
When choosing your shoes, keep in mind that in the heat feet can swell up, so open shoes are the best bet, a pampering pedicure is also the perfect way to relax before your big day.
Transport
If you are getting married in the summer, air-conditioned transport is essential. Your wedding coordinator can advise you on the best way to transport you and your guests so that you all arrive looking and feeling perfect.
What to bring

Although you will be able to get most things you need in resort, as well as those all-important documents, you might want to bring some little extras for that personal touch. Perhaps you have some special music that you would like to play when you make your entrance or for your first dance? It would be a good idea to bring this with you on a CD. If you are having a church wedding, music should be appropriate and authorised by the priest.

Rome Weddings

Founded over 2500 years ago, the Eternal City offers a vast array of things to do and
see. The Eternal City of Rome, long a popular choice as a wedding destination with
Irish couples, provides the perfect backdrop to a sophisticated wedding day. By
merely walking through the streets, visiting the Colosseum, making a wish at the
Trevi Fountain or taking a photo at the Spanish Steps, your already part of the chorus.

Take time out to sip iced coffee at a pavement cafe, enjoy the aroma of baking bread
mingled with fresh fruit from the market stalls nearby, and listen to the sounds of
the Eternal City as it breathes its magic into your very soul.

Rome

This is a city filled with culture, you won't want to miss the Vatican City & Museum, the
awesome St.Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's famous Pieta Statue and his equally
celebrated painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. You'll also want to take in the
Forum, the Colosseum and Capitoline Museums while no trip to the city would be
complete without a visit to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. We can arrange
an elaborate reception in a four star hotel or a simple buffet menu in a choice of our
chosen restaurants. After the ceremony why not enjoy a private city tour for the wedding
party or just the bride and groom!

Wedding Venue

Weddings of an Irish couple or couples of Irish descent, take place in three locations
in Rome - St.Patrick's Church; The Church of San Silvestro and the Irish College. Each
location with it's own uniqueness. Close to 900 'Irish' weddings take place in Italy
every year and the majority of these are in Rome. Therefore it is vital that you arrange
your wedding date as early as possible.

St. Patrick's

Opened in 1911, the facade of the church is described as being close
to the Pisan or Florentine style of the 13th century. The church has beautiful mosaics
and Celtic style cathedral windows.

church by Pope Leo XIII

sea views providing the perfect backdrop.

and you'll get your first glimpse of its dramatic scenery. Why not take a ferry to
the neighbouring islands of Ischia or Capri.

Amalfi Coast Weddings

The Amalfi Coast is special. From Sorrento, as you drive along the winding road
towards Positano, Amalfi and the villages beyond there's a breathtaking view at every
bend. The writer Steinbeck once admitted that he and his wife lay clutched in each
other's arms, "weeping hysterically" while the driver gave them a guided tour.

Stretching for 50km from Sorrento to Salerno, the Amalfi Coast has been described
as the Garden of Eden only better. Cliffs plunge into the sea with picturesque villages
perched on their rocky sides. From Sorrento, drive east towards the impossibly chic
resort of Positano, then on to Amalfi town with its rich maritime history, the hillside
resort of Ravello and further east, to the smaller seaside resorts of Maiori and Minori.

Positano

One of the most fashionable resorts in the Mediterranean, Positano is built into a
rugged cliffside where hotels enjoy sweeping views of the bay below. The resort centre
encompasses steep alleyways, chic boutiques and cafes.

Amalfi

This lively and historic fishing village boasts brightly coloured buildings, quaint shops
and a spectacular sand and shingle beach.

Ravello

What sets Ravello apart from its neighbouring resorts is its two historic villas. Villa
Rufolo, built in the 11th Century, hosts the Wagner music festival every summer, while
Villa Cambrone is renowned for its beautiful gardens.

Positano Wedding Venue

Topflight offer two churches in Positano for your wedding. San Petro Church is perched
high on a cliff edge surrounded by citrus trees and overgrown floral gardens. This
beautiful little church is virtually in its original state. The setting is one of the most
idyllic that one can imagine, with breathtaking views of the sea and the picturesque
town that lies below. Alternatively choose Positano church which is located in the
centre of the town, raised high above the village rooftops. The interior of the church
is one of simple beauty.

Ravello Wedding Venue

Located on a pretty square in the middle of the town in Ravello, the Duomo stands
proud with its white washed walls and crisp finish this church gives you a very angelic
feeling. Adjacent to the church is a private garden ideal for photographs.

beauty spots and an exotic culture. The cuisine is primarily Italian with an Arab
influence.
The island of Sicily offers you the awe-inspiring Mount Etna, rugged mountains,
green hillsides and olive and almond groves.

Giardini Naxos

Naxos, was founded by the Calcides in 734BC and was the first Greek colony in
Sicily. Over the years, Giardini Naxos has become a modest village inhabited by
fishermen and farmers. One of the most popular resorts in Sicily, Giardini Naxos is
renowned for its wide, sandy beaches and charming streets with a great selection
of shops, bars and restaurants. Located a few kilometres from Taormina, it provides
plenty of opportunities for watersports such as diving and water skiing, or you can
simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Perched on a hillside on the breathtakingly beautiful island of Sicily is the medieval
town of Taormina. An ideal place for romantic strolls, enjoying the stunning
architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Topflight can offer civil weddings or church ceremonies on the beautiful island of
Sicily.

Church Weddings in Giardini Naxos

Church ceremonies take place in St. Maria Raccomandata Church. The church is
small and charming and is situated only ten metres from the sea. The original small
church was enlarged during the middle of the 19th century and today it still has
the barrel vault, a refined marble font and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary
dating back to the 19th century.

Civil Weddings in Taormina

It has a unique charm, and has something for everyone's taste. From the old town of
Puerto del Carmen, with its cobbled streets bursting with traditional tavernas and
typical restaurants, to the busy new town.

also ideal if you have many families and young children attending your wedding, as
Lanzarote makes an ideal post wedding holiday destination. For your religious
ceremony we can offer a choice of two churches, both offering a beautiful yet
simplistic setting for your big day.

Puerto del Carmen

The most popular resort on the island, Puerto del Carmen boasts a fine, 4km sandy
beach with an attractive promenade.

Puerto del Carmen Church

This beautiful little whitewashed church located in the harbour area of Puerto del
Carmen. The church is typical Canarian style, with dark wooden pews and beautiful
Andalucian style figures. The simplicity is the real charm of this church.

Tias Church

Located in the quiet town of Tias, fifteen minutes from Puerto del Carmen, this quaint
little church stands alone, but has outstanding beauty in the most simple form, like most
churches in Lanzarote it has dark wooden furniture with a beautiful overstated alter
which compliments the simplicity of the rest of the building.

Puerto Calero / Playa Blanca

civil ceremony.
Puerto Calero:

Originally a fishing village, Puerto Calero has kept its original charm
while turning into a chic resort along the coast. We can offer an outdoor terrace
ceremony overlooking the beautiful marina. This area can also be used as the venue for

Weddings in Malta

Malta! The ultimate in romantic and beautiful sites for weddings… There’s no place like Malta for a unique wedding. You have to experience it to believe it!

Malta and its sister island, Gozo, offer cultural diversity and countless possibilities. Culturally rich and colorful, sun-drenched Malta is your perfect choice for that memorable wedding. From the moment that you make your decision to marry in Malta we will see that you receive the best service and the best deals for that perfect wedding.

Having chosen Malta for your big day, you can now make all the arrangements before you travel and in the days leading up to your wedding.
.

Civil Ceremony

Civil Ceremonies are legally recognized in Malta. The local Registrar can perform the ceremony in the local Registry Office or in a licensed venue such as a hotel, castle or Palace. Please check with the Marriage Registrar that your chosen venue is acceptable, upon which you can expect to pay an additional fee if you marry in a venue other than the local Register Office. The ceremony will be conducted in English, after which you have the opportunity to personalize your ceremony by having a short reading. You are required to have two witnesses present who are no less than eighteen years old.

Religious Ceremony

Malta is recognised as a Roman Catholic country with ninety-one percent of Maltese people belonging to the Roman Catholic religion, although Anglican Church weddings can be celebrated. Religious weddings are legally binding provided the couple comply with the requirements of the local Public Registry in Malta.

Catholic Church Wedding

The bride and groom should allow six months before their wedding date to prepare the required church documents. You should contact your local parish priest to obtain the following documents:
1. Pre-nuptial Investigation forms
2. Affidavits of Freedom to Marry for both bride and groom
3. Baptism and Confirmation Certificates (this can not be issued more than six months in advance)

4. Priest’s written statement that pre-marital instructions have been given
5. Permission by the Ordinary or his delegate for marriage to be celebrated outside his Diocese (in this case Malta)
6. Any required dispensations from the Diocese of the Catholic party
7. Isles in the case of a mixed marriage (that the other non-Catholic part will not obstruct his / her future children from being brought up in the Catholic faith, if the Catholic spouse so wishes)

Once the documents have been completed they are then forwarded by your local parish to the Chancellory (or your Bishop's administration offices). They are then checked and they forwarded onto the Maltese Curia (Archbishop's administration). Here the documents will again be checked and finally be forwarded on to the local parish priest in Malta, who is to perform your wedding.

There will be an administration fee to pay, associated with the above process, and a contribution fee.

Restrictions
It is most unlikely that a couple will be allowed to have a Roman Catholic wedding if either party has been previously divorced. However you may still wish to ask the Maltese Curia will regards to the possibility.

Anglican Church Weddings

One or both parties must be baptised Anglican if you wish to have an Anglican wedding.

Religious Blessing

You may want to consider a religious blessing, bear in mind the ceremony will not be legally binding so you may want to have a Civil Wedding in Ireland before you fly out to Malta. This option is popular with partners where one or both have been previously divorced.

Whatever type of religious ceremony you opt for there are officiates who are able to perform the wedding ceremony in English, however if your ceremony is conducted in Maltese you should arrange to have an interpreter present if neither of you speak Maltese.

Churches & Cathedrals

Wherever you go on the Islands, you'll see baroque churches, their red or silver painted domes in relief against the skyline. Each church is an architectural gem with its own history and cultural treasures.
Here is list of churches where we usually celebrate Catholic marriages:
St. Barbara Church (Republic Street, Valletta)
St. Paul's Parish Church (St. Paul’s Bay) - air-conditioned
St. Domenic's Church (Rabat) - air-conditioned
The Carmelite Church (Balluta Bay, St. Julians)
The Nazarene Church (Tigne Sea Front, Sliema)
The Cathedral of St. Paul (The Main Cathedral of Malta, situated in the medieval city of Mdina)

Residency Stay

There is no residence requirement however couples are required to visit the Marriage Registry in Valletta to finalise the paperwork before their wedding day, so it may be advisable to fly out 2-3 days earlier. You will both need to have your passports with you.

Certificate of No Impediment

First both marrying parties must apply for a Certificate of No Impediment from their local Register Office in Ireland. This process takes 21 days, during which time banns will be published in the register officer. Provided there are no queries arising from your application you will be given a Certificate of No Impediment. The certificate will be valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

Basic Documentation

If you intend to marry in Malta you will need the following documentation:
A copy of the full birth certificate for both the bride and groom authenticated by a solicitor (lawyer or notary). You are also required to bring the original full birth certificate with you to Malta. Under Maltese Law the original birth certificate along with all the other completed legal documentation must remain in Malta. You can obtain a copy of your full birth certificate from your local registry office in Ireland. It would be wise to do this before you hand over your original in Malta.

Parent consent required in the form of Statutory Declaration / affidavit authenticated by a solicitor.
